Your choice to delete your Facebook account means that:

Access to your account can't be regained once its deleted
Deleting your account may be delayed for a few days after you have made the request. This deletion request will be cancelled if you log into your Facebook account during this period of time.
Deleting your data in the back-up system may take up to 90 days and for that reason, your information will not be accessible during this time.
Some things are not stored in your account. For example, your friend may still have the messages you both shared after deletion of your account.
Copies of some materials like your log records may still remain in Facebook's database but they are disassociated from personal identifiers.

Click on the menu button at the top right hand of your Facebook page.
On the pop up screen, scroll down to "Account settings"
On the pop-up screen, click on "General"
On the pop-up screen, tap on "Manage Account"
On the pop-up screen, tap on "Deactivate" at the right hand corner.
Enter your password on the screen that pops up and tap on "Continue".
On the next page, you will be asked if you are sure of the decision to deactivate and to give reasons why you want to deactivate.
After you have provided the necessary information, scroll down to the bottom of the page and tap on "Deactivate" to deactivate your account.
You will once again be asked if you want to deactivate your Facebook account, tap on the "Deactivate" button to deactivate your Facebook account.

On Your Browser

Log in your Facebook account details.
Click the account menu at the top right of your Facebook page.
On the drop-down menu, select the “Settings” option.
The screen that pops up shows your General Account settings, click on "Manage Account"
On the screen that drops down under Manage Account, scroll down to "Deactivate your Account"
At the bottom of the page, click on the "Deactivate your account" link.
A new page will be open, where you need to enter your password.
After entering your password, click on the "Continue" button.
You’ll be directed to a new page, where you need to tell the reason behind your deactivation.
After you've provided the needed information, click on the ‘Deactivate’ button for deactivation.
Facebook will once again ask you to confirm your decision to deactivate Facebook account. Click on the "Deactivate Now" button to immediately deactivate your Facebook account.

*You are advised to download a copy of your Facebook data before you delete your account for future purposes.*
To download a copy of your Facebook data:

Facebook sets new Guidelines and Standards expected from its users

Finally, Facebook has introduced a fresh drive to root out race hate, extremism and fake news from its platform.

The social media giant has published new guidelines on the standards it expects from its users and has urged people to "share responsibly".

In an exclusive interview with Sky News, one of Facebook's top executives has admitted the company's enforcement of policy violations is not at all perfect but insists the company has the interests of its users at heart.

Siobhan Cummiskey, Facebook's head of policy for Europe, the Middle East and Africa said: "We absolutely do have the interests of the community of people who use Facebook at heart, and safety is really important to us, and that's really why we are publishing this new set of community standards."Facebook is also publishing, for the first time, a copy of the guidelines its 7,500 content reviewers use to help weigh up if a post violates the company's policies and should be removed''.

She further went on to say that the said Facebook was in the process of hiring more people to help in the review of content.

Facebook reveals new privacy policies

"It's very important that we use a combination of technology, human reviewers and the flagging of problem content in order to remove posts that violate our community standards," she said.

"We use automation in order to route the various reports that we receive every week. We receive millions of reports every week, and automation helps us to route those reports to the right content reviewer.

"Technology is therefore really helping us here. In the context of child exploitation imagery, we use technology in order to stop the re-upload of known child exploitation images.

"Technology is also helping to counter terrorism. Ninety-nine percent of terrorist content is removed before it is ever flagged by our community of users."The new community standards, posted on Facebook's platform from Tuesday, highlight the firm's determination to act on unacceptable content, but is also an admission the organisation needs to improve

Facebook states: "Our policies are only as good as the strength and accuracy of our enforcement and our enforcement isn't perfect. We make mistakes because our processes involve people and humans are not infallible."

Facebook has been under heavy criticism in recent weeks, with the company's founder Mark Zuckerberg forced to apologise to US politicians over the Cambridge Analytica data mining scandal.

The company was also being accused by a number of governments of not doing enough to tackle terrorist material online.

On sunday, Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt gave the company until the end of this month to come up with a more strong and sturdy system for protecting children on Facebook.

Ms Cummiskey said she is going to welcome the opportunity to work with Mr Hunt and the UK government more generally in improving safety.

Safety is extremely important to us and I think we're only getting better," she said.

"There's always more that we can be doing in this space and that's really what today is all about. It's about being very clear that harmful content has no place on Facebook at the same time we are trying to create a platform for all ideas."

New Privacy Policy on Facebook is in line with EU's Data Rule

Starting from this week, Facebook will start asking its European for permission to use their personal data for targeted advertising and other features in an effort to comply with the European Union's new data privacy regulations.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which goes into effect on May 25, was passed two years ago to tighten restrictions on companies that collect user data on anyone in the European Union. Under the rule, online businesses of all stripes will be required to add more privacy controls and explain to their users why they collect certain information.

Facebook announced in a blog post on Tuesday that users in Europe will soon get a prompt asking if they'd like to see targeted advertising based on personal information they've shared with the company--such as religious and political beliefs--or its external partners. The company will also ask users for permission to use its facial-recognition technology, which Facebook hasn't used in Europe yet because of regulations.

These prompts will expand to users in other parts of the world, including the United States, in the coming months. However, the new consent prompts don't offer users a way to opt out of Facebook's data collection when they aren't on the site, privacy activists told The Wall Street Journal. If you visit a website that has a Like button plug-in, for example, your browser may send Facebook a small amount of information about you even if you're not logged in.

In a bid to further tighten up their security database, WhatsApp, the popular messaging service owned by Facebook Inc, is raising its minimum age from 13 to 16 in Europe to help it comply with new data privacy rules coming into force next month.

WhatsApp will ask users in Europe to confirm that they are at least 16 years old when they are prompted to agree new terms of service and a privacy policy provided by a new WhatsApp Ireland Ltd entity in the next few weeks.

It is not clear how or if the age limit will be checked given the limited data requested and held by the service.

Facebook, which has a separate data policy, is taking a different approach to teens aged between 13 and 15 in order to comply with the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) law.

It is asking them to nominate or appoint a parent or guardian to give permission for them to share information on the platform, otherwise, they will not see a fully personalized version of the social media platform.

But WhatsApp, which had more than 1.5 billion users in January according to Facebook, said in a blog post that it was not asking for any new rights to collect personal information in the agreement it has created for the European Union.

"Our goal is simply to explain how we use and protect the limited information we have about you," it said.

WhatsApp, founded in 2009, has come under pressure from some European governments in recent years because of its end-to-end encrypted messaging system and its plan to share more data with its parent, Facebook.

Facebook itself is under scrutiny from regulators and lawmakers around the world since disclosing last month that the personal information of millions of users erroneously ended up in the hands of a political consultancy - Cambridge Analytica, setting off wider wave of concerns about how it handles user data.

WhatsApp's minimum age of use will remain 13 years in the rest of the world, in line with its parent.

GDPR is the biggest overhaul of online privacy since the birth of the internet, giving Europeans the right to know what data is stored on them and the right to have it deleted.

Apple Inc and some other tech firms have said they plan to give people in the United States and elsewhere the same protections and rights that the Europeans will gain.

European regulators have already disrupted a move by WhatsApp to change its policies to allow it to share users' phone numbers and other information with Facebook to help improve the product and more effectively target ads.

WhatsApp suspended the change in Europe after widespread regulatory scrutiny. It said on Tuesday it still wanted to share the data at some point.

"As we have said in the past, we want to work closer with other Facebook companies in the future and we will keep you updated as we develop our plans," it said.

Other changes announced by WhatsApp on Tuesday includes allowing users to download a report detailing the data it holds on them, such as the make and model of the device they used, their contacts and groups and any blocked numbers.

"This feature will be rolling out to all users around the world on the newest version of the app," it said.

The blog post also points to safety tips on the service, such as the ability to block unwanted users, and delete and report spam.
