Sharing Hospital data | New Facebook's secret mission

Facebook began speaking with hospitals last year about the possibility of matching anonymized user profiles with health data in an effort to improve medical care, according to a CNBC report exposing the program. Facebook confirmed its work to CNBC but said it had hit “pause” on the program last month — presumably following the Cambridge Analytica scandal — to focus on “doing a better job of protecting people’s data” and being clearer about how it’s used.

The plan had been to get hospitals to share anonymized medical information — such as health issues and age, but not name — and match it up with anonymized Facebook accounts that appeared to belong to those same people, according to the report. It would then somehow use insights from users’ Facebook behavior to inform medical treatments. In one example CNBC gives, it says Facebook might have determined that an elderly user didn’t have many local friends, so a hospital may want to send a nurse to check in on them while recovering from a surgery.

Though the report makes it sound like the data would be customized to specific patients, Facebook said in an email to The Verge that it would instead be used more generally. “The project would not attempt to provide health recommendations for specific people,” a spokesperson said. “Instead the focus would be on producing general insights that would help medical professionals take social connectedness into account as they develop treatment or intervention programs for their patients.”In a statement to CNBC, Facebook said, “This work has not progressed past the planning phase, and we have not received, shared, or analyzed anyone’s data.”

This probably wasn’t a great idea even without the privacy scandal from Cambridge Analytica engulfing the company. Essentially, Facebook proposed collecting medical data without users’ permission, then secretly pairing it to their profiles. That is an immense violation of privacy.

Though Facebook was going through medical channels to receive the data — it was in talks with organizations including the Stanford Medical School and the American College of Cardiology, according to CNBC — it sounded like patients would not have needed to consent to their information being shared.

Facebook tells us that there would have been no “de-anonymizing of data” and that data “access would theoretically be limited to select people from Facebook and our medical research partners at the [American College of Cardiology].”

Here’s the explanation Facebook gave CNBC for its motivation behind this program:

“The medical industry has long understood that there are general health benefits to having a close-knit circle of family and friends. But deeper research into this link is needed to help medical professionals develop specific treatment and intervention plans that take social connection into account. With this in mind, last year Facebook began discussions ... to explore whether scientific research using anonymized Facebook data could help the medical community advance our understanding in this area.”

Cathy Gates, the interim CEO of the American College of Cardiology, also gave CNBC a statement, which added, “This partnership is in the very early phases as we work on both sides to ensure privacy, transparency and scientific rigor.”

Facebook had initially focused its research on cardiovascular health. None of the statements make it sound like Facebook is putting an end to the program. Any medical organization that has been in talks with Facebook would be wise to consider carefully the privacy scandal still roiling the company.

‘Comment with BFF’ post a hoax, not a measure of your Facebook account security

Don’t Let the Green BFF Facebook Hoax Trick You: Facebook: Can’t live with it, can’t live without it. Facebook can cause a lot of problems and drama (privacy concerns, anyone?), but it also can help you stay connected to friends, family, old neighbors, and more. So it’s no surprise that, despite its hassles, many of us continue to log into Facebook every day.

Read: How to Completely Delete Your Old Facebook Account.

Still, it’s important to keep the information you post on Facebook—and the information the site and app gather on you—secure. And for every tip that floats around online on a useful way to do this, there’s one that’s not useful at all.

Take this one, which has been floating around Facebook since March:

“Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, invented the word BFF,” it says. “To make sure your account is safe on Facebook, type BFF in a comment. If it appears green, your account is protected. If it does not appear in green, change your password immediately because it may be hacked by someone.”

Read: How to Delete Your Facebook Account Permanently

Snopes, that trusty debunker of internet myths and legends, has already labeled this a hoax. Fortunately, this one isn’t harmful (so no worries if you already tried commenting BFF!), but it’s not exactly helpful, either.

According to Snopes, the green BFF is a Facebook feature that allows you to post animations of common phrases such as “congratulations” and “BFF.” When posted, Mashable reported at the launch of this feature, these words turn a different color, and if you click on them, a brief animation appears. BFF, as one of these words, will turn green. And if it doesn’t, that’s probably related to your browser settings, Snopes found.

So, whether your BFF comment turns green or not, it has nothing to do with your account security. If you changed your password, that’s great for your account security, but it doesn’t mean your account is completely secure forever. And if you didn’t get a green BFF, that doesn’t mean your account is safer than anyone else’s: Don’t let that lure you into a false sense of security. If you have a weak password (like password, 1234, your birthdate, etc.), you could still be at risk for getting hacked.

As with any of your online accounts, you want to make sure you use strong passwords to protect the information you put on Facebook and the information your friends and family share. What Facebook and its affiliates do with that information is another issue, but it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do what you can to protect your account.

And as for the claim that Mark Zuckerberg invented the acronym BFF? According to the Oxford University Press and the New Oxford American Dictionary, the term BFF originated in 1996. Zuckerberg (who was born in 1984) was only 12 years old then, and the birth of Facebook was several years away—so there’s no guarantee he didn’t “invent” BFF, but this writer thinks it’s unlikely.

Writing BFF on your Facebook Account proves it is safe

 Facebook, Hoax     No comments

Over the past few days, a post has been making rounds on Facebook saying how Mark Zuckerberg has set up a security system to check mate and identify whether your account has been hacked, and the keyword to run this security system is – BFF.

People worldwide actually fell for it and and it may sound funny but more people are falling for the trick and have typed ‘BFF’ in the comment section as instructed. They were relieved after their comments turned out to be a green… Many also shared the post thinking they’re doing their friends a favour! Lolsss. Favour indeed!

‘BFF’ is just another word Facebook has chosen that shows a little animation and colored text upon it being typed. The same thing will happen if you type the following words:

If you are a smart social media consumers, you would know it’s a hoax right off the bat because  after you type ‘BFF’, the only thing that happens is that there is an animation of two hands giving each other a high-five. There is no message from Facebook telling you that your account is safe whatsoever after the text comes out in green.

So people, spread the word and let your friends know about this hoax!

How to Merge Facebook Accounts

Merge, Merge Account, Merge Facebook Account     No comments

How to Merge Facebook Accounts - While  Facebook does not allow users to auto-merge all friends, photos, status updates, check-ins or other information, you can manually merge parts of your FB accounts.  Unfortunately, you won’t be able to migrate or re-create all of your data on FB.

How to Merge Facebook Accounts

How to Bulk Download Facebook Data

As a first step, download your data. This procedure can take a while and the archive will serve as your small backup, should you decide to deactivate or delete your Facebook account. It won’t be of great help in restoring any data, though.

Briefly, go to your General Account Settings and click Download a copy of your Facebook data at the bottom.

This will lead you to a page where you can download your information and get a copy of what you have shared on Facebook.

Now do start your archive on this first page. In addition find where it says You can also download anexpanded archive… and click the respective link. This will guide you to the Expanded Archive download page where you will be asked to re-enter your password.

Now here is where you will need patience. Depending on how big your main and your expanded archive are and how many other archives are in the queue, this can take some time. And with that I mean a couple of hours.

Smart Links:

  • Have you changed your email address on Facebook?
  • Facebook remove from group notification
  • How you can change your Facebook password

Note that you must download both archives, to receive a full backup of your account!

Once your archive is available for download, this is what the page will look like.

Although your own photos are supposed to be included in the archive, you should download your Facebook Photos separately. Not only is this procedure another backup, it is also a lot faster and might provide you with more options.

Restore Friends

As mentioned above, you won’t be able to restore or migrate all of your data and that includes your friends. You need to manually add friends to your new account. Unfortunately, it is not possible export your Facebook friends to a third party account and then re-import them to a new Facebook account.

However, you can import contacts from third party accounts such as Skype or Gmail. So if you have contact details of most of your friends on accounts outside of Facebook, you can take a small shortcut. Go to your new Facebook account and import contacts from any supported third party account (CSV files are also supported) via the Find Friends page.

While you can export your Facebook contacts to Yahoo! Mail, it is not be possible to re-import them to Facebook. And contacts imported from Facebook will certainly not be included in a Yahoo! CSV file.

Note that only contact information of friends who have agreed to have their email address included in information downloads can be imported into your Yahoo! account.

Restore Account Data

Here comes the big letdown. There is no way to upload or otherwise import your archive to restore or transfer data from your old Facebook account to your new one. Whatever you want to restore, you have to do it (semi-)manually or use third party tools. Right now, the archive merely serves as a personal backup, nothing more.

So what are your options? You can re-add your old friends as shown above, re-upload photos you downloaded from your old account, re-tag your friends in your photos, re-join groups you were a member of, re-add Facebook apps, manually re-do all your personal settings, including general account and privacy settings, e.g. secure your Facebook account, add trusted contacts, or hide your personal settings. I wish I had good news, but as I said before, you cannot auto-merge two accounts or restore data, so you essentially start from scratch.

Facebooks's following me- the new hoax

 Facebook, Facebook hoax     No comments

The new false alarm making rounds on Facebook claims that there is a way to see accounts that are secretly following you.

Facebooks's following me- the new hoax

It is good to know that the "following me" claim is NOT true. According to fact-checking site Snopes, the supposed spies are found by going to the ''Block Users'' section under Settings.
They are then revealed when you type in "following me" in the search field.

In actual sense, what users are getting is a list of people with the words "following" and "me" somewhere on their profiles, not a pack of clandestine agents.
Snopes pointed out that a similar false charge was made earlier in the year around January. That time, the ''Men in Black'' were discovered by typing "Facebook security" in the field.
Users of the social media site have to navigate these types of hoaxes every few months. Previous scare tactics included a "copyright claim" to prevent losing ownership of posted content and a hacker named "Jayden K. Smith."

Today's hoax on Facebook- follow me

     Facebook, Facebook hoax     No comments

A Facebook hoax has been making the rounds causing fears of online stalking.
But the story has been expelled by experts who say that not just is it a hoax but also that the social media site is still as safe as ever.

The myth that has been circulating claims that each user has a hidden list of “followers”. That is to say, people who can see what you post without being accepted as a “friend”.

Today's hoax on Facebook- follow me

The rumor is that if a Facebook user goes to their settings section and types in “following me”, the site will reveal a list of ''covert followers''.
Fortunately this is not the truth and it is not the first time the hoax has reared its ugly head and scared social media users.

A user claimed to have uncovered the trick and wrote: “I just learned something new. If you go to account settings, blocking, block users, and type in “following me”, without the quotes, you might be surprised just who is following you. I had a lot people on it that I had no clue who they were. They are blocked now. I had to block them one at a time. Creepy... Most were middle eastern persons and all my posts are to friends, not public.”

But typing ''following me'' into a search bar will simply display a list of other users with “following” or “me” in their names or contact information.
According to Facebook’s Help Center, you go to the right corner and select settings, then click public posts, then select friends or public next to who can follow me to see your genuine followers.
